For its first season’s game, the AFRC came with its quasi best squad and 23 players, leaving hope for a good performance after 6 weeks of training. But this 1st game was also the 1st one of season, and more importantly, a game for the Shuto League and to be played under 35 degrees.
After a catastrophic game start by the AFRC who conceded 2 tries due to missed tackles, particularly from our two centers, which let the SHINJUKU JACKS to lead 12 to 0 after 16 mins of play (a very angry Coach told everyone off by requesting a quick "Wake Up" and more aggressive tackles), the forwards took their responsibilities and started to crush ther opponents. Scrums as mauls literally won several meters allowing the backs to move in ideal positions. The "Big Boys", really won the game. We shall note anyway that at the opposite, we were very bad in line outs as we faced a clear problem of synchronization between the thrower and jumper.
And when the pack dominates as it was, what was to happen, happened. Behind his scrum, Yama took and passed the ball to Damien who passed it immediately to Mattheiu who passed superbly to Ishmael who began his festival of "crochets et raffut" went to ground the ball close to the poles (19 mns).
We had to wait ul shortly before the end of the first half to see the AFRC finally taking the lead after a try by marvellous Arthur, try converted by Matthieu DERYCKE. 14-12 at the half time and the wind in the back for the 2nd half was a good point to play with serenity the rest of the match. It was also important to notice few mistakes in the last 20 minutes of the first half (15 in the first 20 minutes and only 8 in the next 15 minutes).
Several substitutions were done at half time to give some rests to the forwards and it did not disturb the confidence of the AFRC. And the forwards had the honor to score again with the second try of Arthur in his peculiar style in picking-up the ball in the ruck at 5 meters of the in goal line and diving over it (19-12 at the 46th mns) and then by our very powerful Joe, (24-12 at the 54mns) after 2 tries which were not awarded by the referee who considered the ball was not grounded but who made the AFRC substitutes very angry along the line out.
Shortly after a real blow knocked the AFRC with the knee injury of our captain Damien on a tackle (62 ‘) but also the decision of the coach to return to let in the last substitute players, who brought disorganizatiobdisorderly this time to the team. The AFRC thought also probably too early that the victory was secured 10 minutes by the end of the match. Nevertheless, errors in the rucks and mauls multiplied, stupid mistakes led to the justified punishment of a yellow card against William for unfair play at 10 minutes from the end, even if the referee was also a bit too fussy in my opinion (though finally, we must accept it) helped the Shinjuku Jacks, in numerical superiority, to score a converted try with their forwards at 63 minutes to close the gap to 24-19.
Only 5 mins remained to play and the Shinjuku Jacks pushed, pushed. The AFRC were cornered in their 22 m. But the defense held firm thanks to the powerful tackles by Ishmael and Matthieu Derycke, but especially with Jean Philippe’s one who, ultimately, stopped a seemingly unstoppable Jacks try that would have let them lead the match again. Finally, the forwards had their heart in their job as they slowed down, played the ball at the limit of the off-side in rucks and mauls to close the game beautifully.
For long minutes, the forwards of the Shinjuku Jacks settled within the 22 m of the AFRC, controlling the ball. 2 minutes before the end of the game, 10 meters from the AFRC try luine, the Jacks forwards created a ruck, ball in hand. In an impressive effort, Charlie Barlow snatched the ball and transmitted it immediately to Yama, who, instantly, passed it to Matthieu DERYCKE who, instead of kicking it far away, decided to counter-attack. Ishmael got the ball and run powerfully until our own 40m when he passed on the left to Jean Philippe, our winger. Jean Phi pursued the attack for 10 more meters and in an intuitive move, passed it back inside to Ishmael. This run on 40 was an eternity of run, an endless run, a run for the match which was concluded by a try in the middle of the posts, try converted by Matthieu DERYCKE to close the score at 31 – 19 for AFRC.
In conclusion, the coach and the captain appreciated their great forwards full of power and cohesion which distroyed his opponents and the backs who have been able to vary their kicking plays, good hands or playing perfecty their attacking strategies repeated so many times durind the last 2 months.
Past weeks trainings hae clearly PAID OFF.
It was also satisfactory to watch a very serious Matthieu DERYCKE, replacing Damien as fly half.
However, we have to keep our feet on the ground and not to be filled with too much enthusiasm. Many parts of our play remain too deficient:
1) the lie-out was a disater: outof 7 of our line out, only 2 balls were well controlled, all the others were lost. These munitions should not be squandered. We must, therefore, work hard, particularly on the coordination between pitcher and catcher.
2) Backs have to remember they have 2 wingers. The back centers still keep the ball a little too much in my taste.
3) A few errors in the ball clearing kicks which could not find the line outs, giving opportunities for socring tries to our opponents.
4) and especially, everyone needs to have a good knowledge of the rugby rules when there are up-and-unders kicks
5) Finally, sorry to name him but Joe was also fully responsible for the yellow card given to William as both should know that at penalty, they must go back 10 meters without obstructing the game.
We shall work all these points during our trainings to come.
